BatterBack and TescoTesco has just announced that it has joined the BatteryBack recycling scheme, which means that battery recycling points will be put in all Tesco stores nationwide to allow customers to dispose of their old batteries correctly.

Purchasing Manager of Tesco, Huw Clifford said “We believe major retails will be key in helping Britain hit battery recycling targets.” Currently only 3% of batteries are recycled in this country but to meet the European targets this must rise to 25% by 2012.

Batteryback is on target to become the largest battery recycling scheme currently having 45,000 collection points but this is expected to rise up to 200,000 collection points all over the UK.

Seen the drums in store for collecting the batteries, look good. Where do you get the fibre drums from? Do the batteries get sent for recycling in the drums>?

  4. David Says:

Is’nt this UK law which has come from the EU battery Directive which came into effect in the UK 1st February 2010 forcing all suppliers who sell more than 32kg of batteries to implement a recycling scheme.

  5. Nicole Says:

I see your point David. The EU Directive has made this law, which means that although Tesco is dealing with this matter superbly, its bid to ‘join the scheme’ is a little misleading as…well..to state the obvious they dont really have a choice!

at last!!! first sainsbury did it then they didnt now they probably do… i used to send used batteries back to duracell then did it at work as it was easier than asking for return bags to be sent… then i just threw them away because of lack of interest by supermarkets etc… now i’ll just recycle them again now there’s somewhere to drop ‘em… what a lo-o-o-ng wait!
