The UK government has recently announced a new code of practice that will require mobile recycling companies to check whether a mobile handset has been stolen before reselling it.

Under the new code of practice, mobile recyclers will have to check the National Mobile Phone Register when they receive a mobile. The National Mobile Phone Register is connected to three databases which include a Police database of stolen phones, a reporting system called Immobilise and a database of blocked handsets. Companies will also have to record the date and time a phones is received, a brief description, the IMEI number, the name and address of the seller and the date when they checked the National databases.

Any mobile recyclers that don’t follow the new code of practice could face sanctions. Up to now around 20 UK mobile recycling companies have signed up which represents about 90% of the industry.

Its estimated that around 100,000 old mobiles phones with an average value of £50 each have been sent in for recycling in the past. According to the Police around 10,000 mobile handsets are stolen per month with 2/3’s of victims being teenagers aged thirteen to sixteen.

Local council household waste and recycling sites are expecting their busiest periods of the year this Christmas as people take unwanted electrical goods, garden waste, clothes and other household rubbish to be disposed of correctly.

Every year local recycling sites handle over 100,000 tonnes of materials of which 70% are either reused or recycled.

To avoid the Christmas rush its recommended that anyone planning at Christmas clear out plans ahead. Most household recycling centres are open 7 days a week but are closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day.

Mobile phone recycling websites are also preparing for their busiest time of the year as people who are getting new phones for Christmas dispose of their old ones to earn extra cash for the January sales.

Many people are now aware of recycling and climate change however the message that old items have a cash value is not being pushed enough to the public.

People in the UK are aware that by recycling their old items like mobile phones, electronics and other items is important to helping the environment, but the fact that businesses are turning their unwanted items into other things is not quite so well known.

One great example of a business that turns old waste into items that are sold to the public is the Cooperative Group. They recycle all the waste from their offices and turn it into toilet paper which is later sold to the general public.

Mobile phone recycling companies will repair and reuse old mobile phones in many third world countries if they have a value. If they cannot be repaired the components will be sold and used in new electronic items and the gold on the circuit boards will be smelted down and then sold on.
